Beatrice Mtetwa and the Rule of Law
For over three decades, Human Rights Lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa has fought human rights abuses in Zimbabwe, in spite of brutal beatings by police and being unlawfully detained in March 2013.
“When all else fails, the law should protect me. Not who I know, not what my political affiliation is, not who I can bribe…”
These are the words of Beatrice Mtetwa, one of the bravest, most passionate human rights lawyers on the continent. For over three decades, Beatrice has fought human rights abuses in Zimbabwe, in spite of brutal beatings by police and being arrested and jailed in March 2013. She continues to courageously defend those jailed by the government – peace activists, journalists, opposition candidates, farmers that have had their land confiscated, ordinary citizens that have the courage to speak up – with the ardent belief that no one, citizen or ruler, stands above the law.
